What is a Lifeline?
A: A Lifeline is a system of calling for help at the touch of a button. It's usually a Lifeline telephone connected to your existing phoneline, with a pendant alarm which is worn around your neck.
They are installed for a variety of reasons, often to help people continue to live independently but also to help support people in vulnerable situations.

Who uses a Lifeline?
A: The main function is to provide an emergency link, often to people who live alone. However, Lifelines are used by lots of people for different reasons, from people who are vulnerable to falling, to those who just want the reassurance of knowing a friendly voice is available at the touch of a button.

How does it work?
A: In the event of an emergency, your telephone might be the only way of getting help. With a Lifeline, help is instantly available, even if the phone is out of reach. The Lifeline is specially designed for this purpose. It has a large red button that when pressed, automatically calls our 24hr Control Centre. The Lifeline has a built-in microphone and loudspeaker, so that you can talk to the Control Centre Operator from around your home. We will immediately contact the right person to get you help. This may be a friend, relative or neighbour. If necessary, we will quickly alert the emergency services.

How do I make an alarm call?
A: Simply press the alarm button on the phone or the button on the small pendant. When either button is pressed, an operator at the Control Centre will answer over the loud speaker. Just explain to the operator what the problem is and what help you need.

What if I can't get to the phone?
A: The pendant works using radio waves and has a range big enough to work around the house and garden (about 90ft). Even if you activate the alarm from another room, the operator may still be able to hear you. If you cannot be heard, the operator will still respond and get help to you.

When should I make an alarm call?
A: There is always someone waiting to take your call. Our Control Centre is staffed 24 hours a day, every day of the year. You should never feel hesitant to make a call.

Should I wear the pendant at all times?
A: We recommend that you wear the pendant at all times when around the house and garden. You never know when you might need it. It is best that you take it off when you go to bed so as not to press it by mistake in the night but leave it by your bedside. And, whilst the pendant is water resistant, try not to submerge.

What if I press the button by mistake?
A: Even if the button is pressed by mistake, we will be more than happy to speak to you. Simply explain to the operator that it was pressed by mistake. Remember, the operator can only speak to you over the main Lifeline unit, so try to remember to take the pendant off when you leave your home.

Can anyone have a Lifeline alarm?

A: The Lifeline Service is available to anyone. You do not have to be disabled or above a certain age, there are no eligibility criteria. The property must have a phone line with a modern telephone socket, within reasonable distance of a power socket.

How much does Lifeline cost?
A: The Lifeline telephones are offered as a rental package which includes the provision of the alarm equipment, the radio pendant, 24-hr cover by the Control Centre and all maintenance. The cost varies on the type of equipment rented and is usually between £12.00 and £17.00 per month.
There may be support available from organisations such as Help the Aged and the Royal British Legion, who may provide a Lifeline free to people who meet their criteria - please ask for details.

What type of alarms are available?
A: We provide Lifeline alarms that incorporate a telephone handset or that connect to your existing telephone. For a few extra pence a week, we can also provide a Mobile Warden service to meet those extra needs.

Can Lifeline be used by people with special needs?
A: The alarm equipment is purpose designed to meet a wide range of special needs. If you would like to discuss how the service can be tailored to meet a certain need, please contact our Control Centre on 01772 436756.

How do I find out more about Lifeline?
A: Telephone our Control Centre on 01772 436756. Full details can be found in the 'contact us' section.

Can I arrange for a demonstration?
A: An officer will gladly visit you at your home, show you how the equipment works and, if you decide you want to proceed, install a Lifeline for you. To arrange a free demonstration, without obligation, please contact us on 01772 436756.
